Unlocking your car with your mobile…

… and your car keys. The idea is actually to use your mobile phone to unlock your car at a distance, by transmitting the car key radio message over the phone network through to your mobile which your car ‘hears’. This blog post reckons it does actually work, at least with one kind of car. Opinions differ — widely — on whether this is a true posting or an urban myth. Some of the commenters on Infoweek claim that remote entry keys use encrypted radio frequencies that mobile phones cannot reproduce. Others suggest that actually it’s much easier: a passing observer can use a tape recorder to record the ‘unlock’ message which can then be reproduced. Of course, bringing your own keys with you remains the simplest method of all.
